What’s a Bizont?

When people first hear our name, they often pause. “Bizont?” “Bizant?” “What does that even mean?” It’s a fair question and one we’re excited to answer.

From a Northern Coffee Shop to a Northern Company

Back in 2016, new to Canada, Bizont’s founder Marcos Castillo was sitting in a coffee shop in Yellowknife, NWT, brainstorming names for a new kind of technology company he wanted to start — one that would bridge business and innovation in the North.

What emerged was more than just a name.

It was a philosophy: Business Owned Technology.

That phrase — “business owned” — became the heart of the company’s purpose. Bizont was founded on the idea that organizations, especially in the North, should have ownership over their technology. Not rely on far-away vendors. Not get locked into systems they can’t control. But truly own their digital future.

Why the Bison

The logo came naturally.

The bison — strong, grounded, resilient — is an animal deeply connected to the North.

So when Marcos evaluated the phrase “Business Owned Technology,” it evolved into a pun.

“Bison” became Bizont — swapping the s for a z to emphasize “business.” (Or biznas if you want some spice)

It was clever, yes, but also symbolic. The bison represents self-reliance, endurance, and connection to place — everything we believe technology in the North should reflect.

How to Say It

So, how do you pronounce it?

It’s Biz-ont, like “biz” in business.

(Not Bi-zont, though Marcos’s accent still sneaks in sometimes)

We like to think the “buzz” sound suits us — sincere, approachable, and a little bit playful.

Why Business-Owned Technology Still Matters

The name “Bizont” started as a wordplay, but its meaning runs deep.

In a world where digital systems are increasingly outsourced, the idea of owning your technology has never been more important. For Northern governments, Indigenous communities, and local organizations, ownership means digital sovereignty — the ability to make independent, informed, and sustainable decisions about their data and tools.

That’s what drives us.

From building custom workflow applications and integrated data reporting solutions, we design systems that our clients can understand, maintain, and grow — not ones that lock them in.

The Meaning That Stuck

So, what’s a Bizont?

It’s a name born in the North, inspired by the bison, and rooted in the belief that technology should be owned, not rented.

It’s who we are — and what we help our partners achieve every day.

P.S. We also like to think we’re pretty good at handling our biznas.
