About the Client

The Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre, located in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, is a museum and cultural space dedicated to the presentation and preservation of the First Nations and scientific history of the vast subcontinent called Beringia (a land bridge that stretched from the Yukon to Siberia). The Centre brings to life the science and stories of this unique period through exhibits featuring extinct megafauna like woolly mammoths and scimitar cats, archaeological discoveries, and Indigenous knowledge.

Operated by the Yukon Government’s Department of Tourism and Culture, the Centre plays a key role in education, cultural preservation, and tourism. It serves a diverse audience: local school groups, curious travelers, and researchers alike. With a focus on storytelling, science communication, and cultural awareness, the Centre needed a digital presence that could reflect the richness of its mission—both visually and functionally.

By late 2024, their website was long overdue for a refresh. Still running on Drupal 7, it lacked modern design, clear navigation, and the backend flexibility required to support its goals and growing audiences.

The Opportunity

The Centre was looking for more than just a technical upgrade. In our initial meeting, the Beringia team shared their desire for a website that was dynamic and customized—something that truly reflected the Centre’s unique character and goals. While government sites often prioritize structure and consistency, this project called for a more expressive and engaging design. We demonstrated how we could bring that vision to life. That early alignment built trust and set the tone for more creative, collaborative decision-making throughout the process.

Bizont was selected through a competitive RFP process, recognized for our local insight, approachable and responsive team, understanding of government funding timelines, and ability to deliver high-quality results on tight timelines.

Tackling Challenges

  • System shift: Moving from Drupal 7 to Drupal 11 came with a learning curve, but we supported the Centre through training and planning to ensure a smooth transition with minimal disruption.
  • Government alignment: As with many YG-affiliated projects, negotiations and approvals required coordination with multiple stakeholders. Our team worked closely together to problem-solve quickly, navigate the process, and stay nimble.
  • Project momentum: Mariazel played a key role in maintaining accountability, ensuring the project adhered to timelines by continuously advocating for next steps and driving forward progress.

The Outcome

The redesigned site launched in Spring 2025. Early wins include:

Positive feedback on improved usability and structure

Improved visibility into how users navigate the site

A stronger foundation for future content growth, particularly for educators

Greater alignment between the Centre’s physical presence and its digital front door
